School-Wide Initiatives

AVID– What is Avid and how will it help my child?

AVID is a framework that means Advancement Via Individual Determination that offers students life skills to be ready for college and careers. We believe that ALL students should have the opportunity to use learning skills that will support their success in the classroom through graduation.

This concept cannot start too soon, so at Renaissance Charter School at Chickasaw Trail, we teach all students in Kindergarten through Eighth Grade strategies that support student organization. In our K-3 classrooms, students are using color coded folders and composition books per subject to keep their work safe and organized. In our 4th-8th grade classrooms, students are using binders with dividers per subject area to take and keep notes daily in one location. All students will learn how to take notes- starting with making sure that the name/date/subject is at the top of any work. In addition, all students will learn how to take 2 column notes with their teachers so they can better organize their thoughts.

In Kindergarten through Fifth Grade, in addition to school-wide strategies in organization, we offer a Model Avid Classroom. This is a classroom with a trained AVID teacher that will experiment with various learning and collaborative strategies and serve as a model for other classrooms to learn from.

In Middle School, in addition to school-wide strategies in organization, we offer a series of AVID electives. In 6th Grade, students can select the Speech & Debate elective to learn and enhance public speaking skills. In 7th and 8th grade, student can select the AVID elective that focuses on college and career readiness through the exclusive AVID elective curriculum.

Learning Focused: What is Learning Focused and how will it help my child?

Learning Focused is a framework designed for our school to coach and teach teachers the best student learning strategies consistently from class to class. As a school we are focusing on mastering three student learning strategies for the upcoming school year:

  1. Focus Board in Classroom- students will see an organized board that states the Essential Question for the lesson that day, the lesson break down by time intervals and expectations for mastery.

  1. Collaborative Learning Strategies- students will learn different ways to communicate, work together and share learning with each other.

  1. Comprehensive Lesson Plans- students will learn in targeted groups with activities and assignments designed using data through the teacher developed lesson plans.

With consistent strategies from classroom to classroom, grade level to grade level, students at Renaissance Charter School at Chickasaw Trail will develop a personal learning toolbox that they can use to help them be successful in any subject.

AIA: What is Attitude Is Altitude (AIA) and how will it help my child?

Attitude is Altitude (AIA) is the reality of a vision created by inspirational speaker, Nick Vujicic. Having traveled the globe to speak inspirationally to millions of people, he discovered that every human being is hungering for the pillars of HOPE, PURPOSE, and HAPPINESS. Observing that many of today’s youth lack positive role models and knowing many teachers desire to see their students be successful in and out of the classroom, this strategic program was developed to help young people grow in their social and emotional learning.

With all the stressors in the world, especially now through a pandemic, at Renaissance Charter School at Chickasaw Trail we feel that the focus on social emotional learning is important now more than ever. We teach our students that your attitude determines your ability to succeed.  At Renaissance Charter School at Chickasaw Trail, in ALL grade levels, we purposely embed time in our weekly master schedule for AIA Social Emotional Instruction and Learning. Each student will have access to all elements of social emotional learning.

Additional Programs and Services

  • Personalized Learning Plans – Assessments will be performed periodically to determine how your child will learn best. Learning styles will be established to tailor lesson plans to meet the needs of each student.
  • Access to PowerSchool’s Student Information System – Parents will be given access to their children’s personal information through a password-protected computer-based system that allows them to monitor their progress. Parents will be able to monitor test scores, homework and attendance on a daily basis.
  • Parent Involvement – We know that children enjoy greater success in school when the adults they admire most take an interest in their education. Our students’ parents are encouraged to commit to volunteer hours each year for the school. These hours foster closer relationships and ensure a more secure learning environment.
  • Uniforms – A school uniform policy is enforced. School uniforms must be purchased exclusively from All Uniform Wear at the Florida Mall only. School uniforms instill a sense of pride in the school as well as each child’s individual appearance. Uniforms allow students to focus on their education instead of designer labels and fashion trends.
  • School Activities and Clubs — Before and After School clubs designed for student engagement and opportunities to learn new things such as coding, robotics, science clubs, game clubs- such as strategy board games, chess etc.
  • Fall & Spring Sports — We are highly competitive in Orange County Sports. We offer Basketball, Volleyball, Track to name a few. In addition, we partner with local sports agencies to offer individual sports such as Martial Arts.
